NDSU holds two commencement rounds and they are in different buildings. Fall Commencement is Friday 18 December 2026 at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex, with ceremonies at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Spring Commencement is Saturday 15 May 2027 at the Fargodome, with ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Both are published on NDSU's registrar calendar, which is the only NDSU page carrying both: the commencement page lists the December round alone. No tickets or guest passes are required and doors open an hour before each ceremony. On rooms, the honest answer is that Fargo does not tighten for this. We measured the December window at 51 bookable properties against a control median of 51.5, which is flat.

The venue moves with the round. That is the single most useful fact on this page, because it means a building you remember from one NDSU ceremony tells you nothing about where the next one is. Both are on campus; they are not the same place.
It is easy to come away from NDSU’s own site thinking the two buildings are in conflict, because the commencement page names the Sanford Health Athletic Complex while the guest-information page discusses parking at the Fargodome. They are not in conflict. They are describing different rounds: the Sanford Health Athletic Complex is December, the Fargodome is May. If you have seen both names and been unsure which applies to you, the answer is whichever round your graduate is in.
The spring date exists, and it is not on the commencement page
When we checked on 16 August 2026, ndsu.edu/commencement carried the December round and nothing else. It was still titled “Spring 2026 Commencement”, a round that had already happened.
The spring 2027 ceremony is published, in full, on the registrar’s academic calendar:

Both pages are official NDSU. They are maintained by different offices on different schedules, and neither is authoritative for the other. If you check only the obvious one, you will conclude NDSU has not announced spring 2027. It has.
What the day actually asks of you
NDSU’s guest guidance is unusually undemanding, and the three facts that matter are all published:
- No tickets or guest passes are required. No allocation per graduate, no request window, no deadline to miss.
- Doors open one hour before each ceremony.
- Parking is free.
The December round is the one to think about, because a 5 p.m. ceremony in Fargo in the third week of December ends well after dark, in a city where mid-December afternoons are short and the weather is a real variable. If your plan involves driving out the same evening, that is the ceremony where it stops being a good plan.
What is not published for either upcoming round is the per-college split across the two ceremony times. NDSU has split colleges by ceremony time in a previous spring round, so the shape is plausible, but nothing is announced for December 2026 or May 2027, and a previous year’s split is not carried forward here. If your graduate’s sitting decides your travel, that is the one detail still to chase.
We measured whether Fargo tightens, and it does not
This is where a lodging page usually tells you to hurry. The measurement says otherwise.
Five matched two-night searches in Fargo, one session, 16 August 2026, two adults and one room, Thursday check-ins throughout so the window matches a Friday afternoon ceremony:

The commencement window is level with every control around it. Fargo-Moorhead is a genuine metro with real depth, and a winter ceremony does not visibly move it four months out. That is consistent with almost every December round measured across this site.
So book early here for the Thursday night and for rate, not because the room will otherwise be gone.
The collision that does matter, and it is not about rooms in Fargo
NDSU and the University of North Dakota graduate on the same day, twice.

Both are confirmed on each university’s own pages. This is not a near miss in one round; it is the same day in both.
What it costs you is not a room in Fargo, which we have just shown holds up. It costs you the fallback. Grand Forks is the next genuinely separate market north on I-29, and on the only two dates this cluster is about, it is running its own graduation. Every other night of the year it is a sensible overflow option. On these two, it is the last place to look.

That sits level with its own controls. Book early for the Thursday night and for rate, not because the room will otherwise be gone.
Why does an NDSU page keep mentioning UND?
Because it decides where you can fall back to. The University of North Dakota graduates in Grand Forks, 75 miles north, on Friday 18 December 2026 AND on Saturday 15 May 2027, which is both of NDSU's dates. Grand Forks is normally the next real market north; on these two dates it is running its own ceremony.
