Which date is yours, and which building

UND publishes its whole year, which is rare. It also spreads it across more dates and more buildings than most families expect.

Two things this table is doing that our previous version did not.

It shows the 8 May weekend at all. A law or medical family travels a week before everyone else, and a page built only around the 15 May date sends them on the wrong weekend.

It separates the buildings. The 15 May round is at the Alerus Center, three kilometres south of campus and a different part of Grand Forks. For that date, “near campus” is the wrong instruction; for every other date it is the right one.

The good news across all of them: because UND stacks its ceremonies into a single day rather than spreading them over a weekend, this is a one-night cluster for most families. That is unusual and it takes a lot of pressure off a thin market.

The December pressure is specific to December, and it is the section below.

Grand Forks in the third week of December

The market here is thin in the ordinary way a northern-plains city of this size is thin. UND publishes no recommended hotel list and no commencement-specific booking terms, so there is no minimum-stay rule or deposit deadline to report, and none has been invented to fill the space.

What there is instead is a date problem.

Crookston, and the Fargo problem

The two working fallbacks are Crookston, Minnesota at about thirty minutes and the Fargo-Moorhead metro at about seventy-five.

Crookston is genuinely small: a real option for a handful of families rather than a deep market. Fargo-Moorhead is the opposite: far and away the deepest hotel base within reach of Grand Forks, and in almost any other week of the year the obvious answer.

On December 18, 2026, it is not. North Dakota State holds its own winter commencement in Fargo that same Friday. Two graduating classes, two cities, one interstate, one date, and neither university’s guidance mentions the other. A family displaced out of Grand Forks that evening is driving toward a market absorbing its own graduation crowd.

That is the whole argument for booking this one early. Not because Grand Forks is famously scarce, but because the escape route is closed on precisely the night you would use it.

What the university does not tell you

Three gaps, listed rather than smoothed over.

UND names no hotels, so anything specific you read elsewhere about “official” commencement lodging here is not coming from the university. East Grand Forks, directly across the Red River and the natural first overflow, would not resolve on our mapping tool across three attempts and is deliberately absent. Search it yourself: it may well have rooms. And no live per-night availability count was obtained this session, so the ring descriptions above are about market structure rather than numbers we watched.
