The whole of December happens on one Friday

That college split is published, and it is the thing to check before you book anything. The gap between the two undergraduate ceremonies is three hours, so a family with graduates in both groups is at the Chester Fritz from lunchtime until early evening.

The compensation is that it is one day. Unlike most clusters on this site, UND’s December round does not spread across a Friday and a Saturday, so most families need a single night rather than two. The night to hold is the Thursday if your ceremony is the 9:00 a.m. one, and the Friday if it is the 4:00 p.m. one, because a mid-December afternoon in Grand Forks ends in the dark and the drive out is the part to avoid.

Spring is two weekends, not one

This is where a family gets caught, and our own page was getting it wrong until this audit.

Two things follow.

The dates are a week apart. A law or medical family travels on 8 May. Everyone else travels on 15 May. Booking “UND graduation weekend” without checking which one is yours is how people end up in Grand Forks on the wrong Saturday.

The venues are different buildings in different parts of town. The 8 May ceremonies stay on campus at the Chester Fritz. The 15 May round moves to the Alerus Center, about three kilometres south, which is a separate destination with its own surroundings. If you are coming for 15 May, “near campus” is not the instruction you want.

There is also a summer round: Friday 6 August 2027 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chester Fritz, covering professional, graduate and undergraduate degrees in a single ceremony.

The regional problem: NDSU graduates the same Friday

Worth knowing before you treat Fargo as your fallback.

North Dakota State holds its winter commencement on the same Friday, 18 December, 75 miles south down I-29. Fargo is the natural overflow market for Grand Forks and the deepest hotel base within a reasonable drive. On this particular date it is running its own graduation weekend.

That does not make Fargo impossible. It makes it contested rather than safe, which is a different thing from how a fallback normally behaves, and it is the reason to sort a room earlier here than the size of Grand Forks would suggest. What we checked, and how

Every date, time, venue and college assignment above was read directly from UND’s own commencement page on 18 August 2026. Days of the week were checked independently: 18 December 2026 is a Friday, 8 May 2027 a Saturday, 15 May 2027 a Saturday and 6 August 2027 a Friday.

Two corrections this audit made to our own pages. The 8 May ceremonies were missing entirely, so a law or medical family reading this cluster would have seen only the 15 May date and travelled a week late. And December’s three ceremonies were stored as one, with the times pushed into a venue field where they never reached the page, so none of the hours above was previously visible and the college split was not published at all.

Worth recording that the stored 15 May date and the Alerus Center were correct. UND’s spring section opens with the two 8 May ceremonies, and reading only the first lines would have “corrected” a right date into a wrong one.

An access note, because the next check will meet it. und.edu returns a cached advertising-tracker snapshot through the reading proxy we normally use, and serves normally to a direct request with a browser user agent. It also redirects /commencement/ to /academics/commencement/. A tracker-probe response is a block, not evidence that a date is unpublished.

Not published, and each a real gap: any college split for the spring undergraduate ceremony, where December has one; ticket or guest limits for any ceremony; and door opening times.
