The metro is one market, not three
Fargo looks like it has more lodging than it does, and the reason is a mapping habit rather than anything about hotels.
Searched on the same two-night December window on 16 August 2026:

A town of West Fargo’s size cannot hold more hotels than Fargo. Neither can Moorhead. What those two searches return is the whole Fargo-Moorhead metro, reached from a different starting point, and the honest reading is that all three names describe one market. West Fargo is about ten minutes from the core. Moorhead is directly across the Red River.
So the number to plan against is roughly 51 bookable properties, and adding the other two would be counting the same rooms three times. If you widen a search to West Fargo and feel relieved at the result, that relief is an artefact.
This also explains a quirk of the map on this page. Fargo’s own coordinates failed to resolve on our mapping tool across six separate attempts spanning downtown, the NDSU campus, south Fargo, north Fargo and the I-94 corridor, so the map is anchored on Moorhead instead. Given everything above, that substitution costs a visitor nothing: it is the same market seen from the Minnesota side.
NDSU will not recommend you a hotel
Worth knowing before you spend an afternoon looking for an official rate. NDSU names no properties and operates no commencement block. Its guest guidance sends families to the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitors Bureau to choose accommodation.
That is a defensible choice by the university and it has one practical consequence: there is no block to be shut out of, and no commencement rate to miss. You are booking on the open market, which is the same market as any other December weekend.
The fallback is the problem, not the room

The constraint on this cluster is one step further out. Grand Forks, 75 miles north on I-29, is the only genuinely separate market in reach, and it held 45 bookable properties on the December window. On almost any night of the year that makes it a reasonable overflow option.
Not on these two.

Both universities graduate on the same day, in both rounds, confirmed on each university’s own pages. The state’s two deep markets are busy simultaneously, which removes the assumption that either can absorb the other’s overflow.
The practical version: do not plan on Grand Forks. If the metro is genuinely full, you are looking at a longer drive than 75 miles, and the UND cluster explains what is happening at the other end of I-29.
Which night to book
For December, take the Thursday. The ceremonies run 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, and a 5 p.m. start in Fargo in the third week of December finishes well after dark, with winter driving conditions a genuine variable. Thursday covers arrival without a pre-dawn start; Friday covers not leaving in the dark.
For May, the ceremony is a Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Fargodome, so the Friday night is the one that matters, and a 10 a.m. start makes that fairly firm.
Both rounds are two-night stays for anyone arriving from outside the metro, and neither is a booking race.
