One fixed date, and a weekend that moves around it
Ole Miss holds its Commencement Convocation on Saturday 8 May 2027, in The Grove.
The Grove is the ten-acre stand of oaks at the middle of the Oxford campus, known outside Mississippi as the ground where Ole Miss tailgates on football Saturdays. The Inn at Ole Miss, the only hotel on campus, is less than 150 steps from it, which is the single fact shaping every lodging decision for this weekend.
The date comes from the university’s own registrar calendar for 2026-2027, read on 10 August 2026, and we checked the weekday independently: 8 May 2027 is a Saturday.
One thing to hold alongside it. The commencement office’s own guide still answers “When is commencement 2027?” with “More information coming soon”, and gives the same answer on tickets. The registrar sets the calendar date; the commencement office publishes the running order later. Both are official, and they are not in conflict, they are simply on different schedules.
What Convocation actually is
Ole Miss uses the word for something broader than a diploma line.
Convocation is the campus-wide celebration of graduation. It carries the university awards and the main Commencement speaker, and it seats students and faculty together in academic regalia in The Grove, beneath the banners of the university’s schools and colleges. It is the one moment in the weekend where the whole institution is in a single place.
Morning Convocation begins at 9:00 a.m., and the university asks graduates and families to arrive early enough to allow ample time for parking. If the weather turns, the morning moves indoors to the SJB Pavilion.
Two practical consequences. A 9 a.m. start on a campus parking thousands of cars is a night-before trip for anyone not already in Oxford. And a wet-weather venue means the location you drive to can change on the morning itself, so the parking plan needs to survive that switch.
The qualifier most families miss
Here is the part of the registrar’s entry that deserves more attention than the date.
Alongside “May 8 | Saturday | Commencement Convocation”, the calendar adds that individual school and program ceremonies may be scheduled on that date or on the days before or after May 8. The university is saying, in its own calendar, that Convocation is the only fixed point in the weekend.
The booking consequence is direct. A family reserving the Saturday night on the assumption that Saturday is graduation day can find their graduate’s school ceremony lands on the Friday afternoon or the Sunday morning, by which point Oxford has nothing left at any price. The Convocation date is public a year out. The school schedules are not, and they decide when you actually need to be in town.
Ole Miss confirms who holds that information: individual ceremony detail is sent to graduates by their dean’s office nearer the date. Chase the school, not the central calendar.
Parking, access and getting back to the car
More is published about access than about the schedule, and it is the useful half for anyone travelling with an older relative.
ADA parking for ceremonies at the SJB Pavilion is recommended in the Pavilion garage off Hill Drive. For anything at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts, ADA spaces are in the Ford Center’s own lot. Courtesy shuttles run from the lots around the SJB Pavilion, and a shuttle tent sits in front of the building where guests wait for the ride back after ceremonies finish.
For accessible seating, get to the venue an hour before the start and speak to an attendant on arrival. Ole Miss is honest that the ADA section is limited: a guest can be seated there, but the rest of a large party will usually be placed nearby rather than together.
ASL interpreters cover every ceremony, morning Convocation included, and each ceremony carries a closed-captioned live stream that guests can follow on a phone in the venue or watch from home.
Still open at the time of writing
The 2027 start times for individual school ceremonies, the seating and doors-open times, and the ticket rules were all unpublished when this page was checked. Ole Miss answers its own ticket question with “More information coming soon”.
The special program ceremonies, including the Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence, the Trent Lott Leadership Institute and the Croft Institute for International Studies, are described as sharing detail with families once it is finalised, so nothing about them is fixed here either.
The 9:00 a.m. start, the SJB Pavilion wet-weather plan, the parking and the access arrangements come from the university’s standing commencement guidance rather than from a dated 2027 schedule.
