RIT's commencement is Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May 2027, confirmed on the university's own commencement site, which words it "Friday and Saturday May 7 - 8, 2027" — and both day labels check out against the calendar. The academic calendar agrees: classes end Monday 26 April and the last final exam is 5 May, so the ceremony follows two days later. What is not settled is WHICH BUILDING. RIT names four venues for this round — Gordon Field House, the Gene Polisseni Center, Sustainability Institute Hall and Panara Theater — without publishing which college or degree level sits in each, and its detailed schedule page is behind a university login that cannot be read from outside. That is a different problem from most campuses on this site: all four buildings are on one campus, so it does not change your hotel. It changes where you park and how long you walk, on a morning when you will not want to discover either.

What’s confirmed

RIT’s own commencement site gives “Commencement - May 7-8, 2027”, and words it in full as “Friday and Saturday May 7 - 8, 2027.” Both day labels were cross-checked: 7 May 2027 is a Friday and 8 May is a Saturday.

The academic calendar backs the window from the other end — classes end Monday 26 April 2027, final exams run 28–30 April and 3–5 May, and commencement follows two days after the last exam.

Worth noting how that was verified, because it nearly went wrong. A first pass at these dates came from a search summary rather than the source, and returned days of the week that belonged to 2026, not 2027. The weekday cross-check is what caught it. On this site a date is not confirmed until the day of the week agrees with the calendar.

Four buildings, and no map from college to building

RIT names four venues for this round:

  • Gordon Field House
  • Gene Polisseni Center
  • Sustainability Institute Hall
  • Panara Theater

What it does not publish is which college, school or degree level sits in each. RIT’s detailed schedule page is behind a university single sign-on, so it cannot be read without an RIT account — which means for a visiting family, the assignment simply is not available from outside.

This is a different kind of unknown from the ones on most pages here. At UC Irvine or Minnesota, an unpublished assignment means you might book the wrong week. At RIT, all four buildings sit on one campus in Henrietta. Your hotel does not change.

What does change is the specific: which car park, which entrance, how far the walk, and whether two ceremonies you care about are in buildings ten minutes apart. Ask the college directly — they generally know before the central page updates.

RIT is not in Rochester

This trips people up and it is worth being blunt about.

The campus is in Henrietta, a suburb about fifteen minutes south of the city. Somebody who books “a hotel in downtown Rochester” because that is the name they recognise has booked a real drive to a morning ceremony, not a walk.

The cluster that actually serves this campus is the suburban corridor along West Henrietta Road, and the anchor there is the RIT Inn & Conference Center — “304 spacious sleeping rooms” by its own description, on a page hosted at rit.edu, and “only minutes away” from campus. Three hundred rooms is a large single block for a suburban market, which makes it both the obvious first call and the one thing here that can genuinely sell out.

Planning the two days

Book two nights, refundable if you can, until the ceremony day is confirmed. A Friday ceremony and a Saturday one need different nights, and that assignment is part of the same unpublished schedule.

One thing in your favour: early May is ahead of the Finger Lakes season. The region’s own tourism has not started, so you are not bidding against holiday visitors the way a June ceremony in coastal California would. The suburban cluster is a realistic base rather than a gamble — which is not something this site gets to say about every campus.

Frequently asked questions

When is RIT's 2027 commencement?

Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May 2027. RIT's own commencement site gives "Commencement - May 7-8, 2027" and describes it as "Friday and Saturday May 7 - 8, 2027". Both days were cross-checked against the calendar and match. The academic calendar corroborates the window, ending classes on Monday 26 April and finals on 5 May.

Which building is my graduate's ceremony in?

Not published, and it is the one thing worth chasing. RIT names four venues for the round — Gordon Field House, the Gene Polisseni Center, Sustainability Institute Hall and Panara Theater — but not the college-to-building assignment. Its detailed schedule page sits behind a university single sign-on, so it cannot be read without an RIT account. Ask the college directly.

Does the building affect where we should stay?

No, and that is worth saying plainly because at other universities it would. All four venues are on the same campus in Henrietta, so any hotel near campus serves all of them. What the building affects is parking, the walk in, and how much margin you need on the morning.

Is RIT actually in Rochester?

Not really, and it catches people out. The campus is in Henrietta, a suburb roughly fifteen minutes south of the city. A hotel booked "downtown Rochester" is a real drive from the ceremony, not a walk, and the useful cluster is the suburban corridor along West Henrietta Road.

Where is the largest block of rooms?

The RIT Inn & Conference Center at 5257 West Henrietta Road, which its own page — hosted on rit.edu — describes as "304 spacious sleeping rooms" and "only minutes away from Rochester Institute of Technology". That is by far the biggest single block near this campus.

How many nights do we need?

Two covers most families. Whether they are Thursday-Friday or Friday-Saturday depends on which day your ceremony falls, which is part of the same unpublished assignment — so a refundable rate is worth having until the schedule appears.

Is this a busy weekend in the area otherwise?

Early May sits ahead of the Finger Lakes season rather than inside it, so the region's own tourism has not started. That is in your favour, and it is why the suburban cluster is a realistic base rather than a gamble.
