What is confirmed, and what is not
Two different levels of certainty on this cluster, and it is worth separating them before you book anything.
Confirmed. Summer Commencement is at 6pm on Thursday 6 August 2026 in the William R. Johnson Coliseum, from SFA’s own guest information page. Same page: admission is free, tickets are not needed, seating is first-come, first-served.
Tentative. SFA’s Future Ceremonies page lists Fall Commencement as “Dec. 17-18” and prints the word tentative next to it. We are repeating that because a university’s own provisional date is more useful than nothing, but it is not a date to build non-refundable travel around yet.
The seating detail is the real story here
Most commencement pages worry about hotel rooms. At SFA the more immediate constraint is a chair.
SFA states plainly that attendance is free and unticketed, that all seating is first-come, first-served, and it asks guests to avoid saving large groups of unoccupied seats. That last line is the interesting one. Universities do not add that request to a page unless people have been doing it, which means the Coliseum’s general admission fills tightly enough for seat-saving to have become a problem worth addressing in writing.
The practical consequence: at a ticketed ceremony you can arrive thirty minutes ahead and sit down. Here, a large family that wants to sit together needs to be there considerably earlier, and someone needs to hold the block.
A 6pm start, and where you would drive afterwards
An evening ceremony finishing after dark changes the calculation for anyone not local:

Being straight about the isolation
We put SFA on our build list partly because Nacogdoches looked like a classic isolated college town, and it is one in most respects. But then we measured the ring, and Lufkin is only about 20 miles away with its own chain-hotel cluster.
That is a genuine half-hour fallback, not a penalty, and it means SFA is less squeezed than campuses whose nearest alternative is an hour out. We would rather correct our own expectation on the page than let the framing imply a shortage that is not there.
The map points at Nacogdoches, not the Coliseum
The Johnson Coliseum’s own coordinate returns a 404 on the booking map we use, so the map here is anchored on central Nacogdoches instead. That is where the North Street and US 59 hotels sit anyway, so the practical result is unchanged, but the pin is the town rather than the venue.

Do we need tickets, and how early should we arrive?

That last detail is the tell: it is the kind of note a university adds after seating pressure has become a real problem. If you have a large party and want to sit together, arrive well before the hour.
Does a 6pm ceremony mean staying the night?
For most travelling families, yes. A 6pm start at the Johnson Coliseum finishes in the evening, and the nearest markets are Lufkin at 20 miles, Tyler at 64 and Houston at 135. Lufkin is a manageable drive afterwards; Tyler and Houston are not, particularly in the dark.
How isolated is Nacogdoches, really?
Less than its reputation. Nacogdoches is genuinely deep in the Piney Woods with no metro nearby, but Lufkin sits about 20 miles away with its own hotel cluster, which is a real half-hour fallback. That is why we grade this cluster elevated rather than high. The pressure here is about seating and arrival timing more than about a shortage of beds.
How many students graduate at once?
We could not find a published figure. Neither SFA's commencement pages nor its newsroom gave a graduating-class or attendance count we could cite, so this page does not estimate one. If that number becomes available it belongs here, because it is the figure that would tell you how hard the Coliseum's free seating is actually being pushed.
