One ceremony, nine colleges, half past nine

SIU’s next commencement is Saturday 12 December 2026 at 9:30 a.m. in the Banterra Center.

What makes this cluster unusual is not the date but the shape. Most universities on this site split December across degree levels or colleges, spreading families over two or three days. SIU does not. It runs one ceremony and puts all nine colleges and schools into it:

• College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences
• College of Arts and Media
• College of Business and Analytics
• College of Engineering, Computing, Technology, and Math
• College of Health and Human Sciences
• College of Liberal Arts
• School of Education
• School of Medicine
• Simmons Law School

Law and Medicine are in that list, which is worth pausing on. At most universities the professional schools graduate separately, often on a different day and sometimes in a different building. In December at SIU, everyone is in the Banterra Center at 9:30 in the morning.

For a family that is the simplest possible schedule and the least flexible one. There is no second session to fall back on, and a 9:30 a.m. Saturday start in a town this size means the Friday night is the night that matters.

Spring 2027 is a date and nothing else yet

Saturday 8 May 2027 is confirmed on SIU’s own 2026-2027 academic calendar. That is the whole of what is published.

No start time. No number of ceremonies. No college split. We are not going to fill that in from the December round, and here is exactly why that would be a mistake: the last spring round SIU published in full, May 2026, ran three ceremonies across two days at two different venues, with Simmons Law School at Shryock Auditorium on the Friday afternoon and the remaining colleges in two Banterra Center sessions on the Saturday.

So SIU has recently run spring as a two-day, two-venue event and is running December as a one-hour, one-venue event. Reading either onto 2027 would be a guess. If your graduate is finishing in spring, the thing to watch for is the ceremony schedule appearing on SIU’s commencement site, and the thing to avoid is booking a single Saturday night on the assumption that spring works like December.

Getting in

SIU publishes this properly, on its guests page, and it applies to commencement generally rather than to one round.

• The venue. “SIU Commencement ceremonies will take place in the Banterra Center, 1400 Arena Drive, Carbondale IL.” That is SIU’s own general statement, which is what supports the address for the May date as well as the December one.
• No tickets, and guest seating is first come, first served. SIU asks guests to be seated 15 minutes before the start.
• Parking uses Banterra Center lots 18 and 56 plus lots 52 and 37. Arrive early: SIU says so itself, on account of the crowd.
• Accessible arrival. Drop-off for guests with limited mobility is on the west side of the Banterra Center, off Douglas Drive, and disability parking is in Lot 52. Wheelchair and limited-mobility seating runs along the concourse level, first come first served.
• Leave the balloons in the car. Balloons, signs and noisemakers are discouraged, outside food and drink are not allowed in, and bags may be inspected at every entrance.

Graduates sit on folding chairs on the arena floor, so if a graduate needs a larger chair, a seat for a personal assistant or wheelchair space, SIU asks that you arrange it in advance by email rather than on the day.

What we checked, and what we could not

Both dates, the December time, the venue, the college list and every guest rule above were read directly from SIU’s own commencement site, its guests page and the registrar’s 2026-2027 academic calendar on 17 August 2026. Both weekdays were checked against the calendar: 12 December 2026 and 8 May 2027 are both Saturdays, as SIU states.

Not published: the start time, session count and college split for 8 May 2027, and whether Simmons Law will again hold its own ceremony at a separate venue that weekend.

Confirmed absent rather than assumed: there is no summer ceremony. The registrar’s wording is that ceremonies are “now held only in May and December”, with summer undergraduate candidates listed in both the May and December programme booklets.
