The start time is a different matter, and it is worth being precise about why. The date turned up on a Gies College of Business events calendar, which lists it as an entry running “8:30 AM to 8:30 AM”, a zero-length event, which is how that calendar renders an all-day item. That is a calendar artefact, not a published start time, so this page does not tell you the ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. Illinois’s own commencement site is still on the 2026 cycle and has published no 2027 hour.
The ceremony you want may not be the big one
Illinois is large enough that the campuswide Commencement does not read individual names. That happens at the college and department convocations, which are separate ceremonies in separate buildings, timed so as not to clash with the main event.
If the moment you are travelling for is your graduate crossing a stage and being named, the convocation is the ceremony that matters, and its time and building come from the college rather than from the university calendar. Illinois had not published the 2027 convocation schedule when we checked, so ask the college directly rather than waiting for a central list.
A name change worth knowing about
The stadium was renamed Gies Memorial Stadium in 2025 following a major gift. “Memorial Stadium” is still in wide use, including on some of the university’s own listings, so do not be thrown if you see both; they are the same venue.
