Three towns, then three hours of nothing
The number that matters here is not a hotel count, it is a gap.

Arcata, Eureka and Fortuna hold forty properties between them. After that the next real market is Redding, three hours inland over State Route 299, which is a mountain road.
That gap is the cluster. Most places on this site have a deep city an hour away doing the rescuing. Here there is nothing to rescue you, and Redding is listed above only to show the scale of the isolation. It is not a fallback and this page does not offer it as one.
Fortuna is new to this page. Earlier versions ran straight from Eureka to Redding, which made the ladder look like a cliff. Seven properties at twenty-five minutes is not much, but it is a real third option and it belongs on the list.
Eureka is the better first search if you want choice: more than twice Arcata’s supply, fifteen minutes down US-101. Arcata is the better choice if you want to be close, which matters more here than usual, because Cal Poly Humboldt has not published a ceremony time or a venue.
December on the North Coast
Two things worth building into the plan.
The venue is Lumberjack Arena, an indoor arena, so the weather question that the spring 2026 ceremony at the outdoor Redwood Bowl carried does not apply. The three college ceremonies on 18 December have no published times yet, so check before you finalise anything.
Getting here is the hard part. Arcata is roughly five hours from San Francisco with no continuous freeway, and the regional airport has limited service. Whatever you save by staying in Fortuna, you will not save on the approach.
Local public radio covering a past Cal Poly Humboldt graduation weekend told residents plainly to “remember that the town will be extra busy with visitors this weekend”. In a town with ten bookable properties, that is a low bar to clear.
What is not established
No ceremony times for the December round (the page lists them as to be determined for each of the three colleges). No guest-ticket or seating policy, no parking guidance, and no confirmation of a livestream.
No named Arcata or Eureka property was confirmed sold out for the December window, and no commencement rate, minimum stay or cancellation policy was verified anywhere on this ladder. Drive times are fair-weather estimates on US-101 and SR-299; December on the North Coast is a wet season and 299 in particular can close.

Counts come from a live per-window availability check run on 12 August 2026 for the two nights spanning the ceremony. FORTUNA was added on the strength of that check: it holds 7 bookable properties at about twenty-five minutes and had never been carried, which mattered because the ring previously ran straight from Eureka to Redding, three hours inland. McKinleyville was tested and holds 2, too few to list. Redding is retained deliberately, with its caveat intact, because the three-hour gap between the second and third entries is itself the clearest statement of how isolated this campus is.
