Fayetteville State graduates on Friday 11 December 2026 at 10:00am in Felton J. Capel Arena, and the university is blunt about the door: "The processional will begin promptly at 9:45am. No guests will be allowed to enter during the processional." Guests should be seated before 9:45am, and the graduate is due at the Capel breezeway by 8:30. Rehearsal is the Thursday afternoon, 10 December at 2:00pm, so the graduate needs the Thursday night too. No hotel is walkable from campus: the Hilton Garden Inn on Sycamore Dairy Road is five and a half miles and ten minutes away with 104 rooms, the Hampton Inn on Skibo Road is the same distance with 131, and the I-95 exit 49 pair, the 148-room DoubleTree and the 94-room Holiday Inn Express, are fourteen minutes the other way. Spring 2027 is not published on any FSU page this site could read, so no May date appears here.

Two clusters, neither of them on campus

Fayetteville has plenty of hotels and none of them is beside Fayetteville State. They sit in two groups, and the choice is really a choice of which road you drive in on.

West, toward Cross Creek Mall: the Hilton Garden Inn, 4025 Sycamore Dairy Road, 104 rooms and suites over four floors per HotelGuides, five and a half miles and about ten minutes from campus; and the Hampton Inn, 1700 Skibo Road, 131 rooms, the same ten minutes.

Southeast, at I-95 exit 49: the DoubleTree by Hilton, 1965 Cedar Creek Road, 148 rooms and suites, fourteen minutes from campus; and beside it the Holiday Inn Express & Suites South Fayetteville, 1894 Cedar Creek Road, 94 rooms and suites.

None of the four publishes a commencement-specific minimum stay, prepayment or cancellation rule, and none is claimed here. FSU publishes no hotel list on the pages read.

The door closes at 9:45

FSU’s winter commencement page gives the date plainly, “Commencement: Friday, December 11, 2026, 10:00am” in Felton J. Capel Arena, and then the sentence that decides your travel: “The processional will begin promptly at 9:45am. No guests will be allowed to enter during the processional. All guests should make plans to be seated prior to 9:45am.”

That is a hard cut fifteen minutes before the advertised start. A family driving from Raleigh that morning is betting on I-95 at rush hour against a locked door. The Thursday night, 10 December, is the safe booking, and the graduate needs it anyway: “Commencement rehearsal will be Thursday, December 10, 2026 at Capel Arena at 2:00pm.” Students report to the Capel breezeway by 8:30 on the Friday morning.

For anyone who cannot be there, the ceremony “will also be streamed live on the FSU Commencement webpage.”

Parking is the open question

The page says FSU “will share important parking information” as the ceremony approaches, and gives 910-672-1775 for questions. At the time of writing there is no published lot list for December, so leave more time than the ten-minute drive suggests. The ceremony weekend logistics page carries whatever the university has posted.

The ring, for a fuller weekend

Spring Lake, 15 minutes north past Fort Bragg, and Hope Mills, 18 minutes south, are small and close. Lumberton, 45 minutes down I-95, and Sanford, 51 minutes toward the Triangle, are real towns with their own hotels, useful if a Fort Bragg event has taken the city.

Drive times are off-peak road routes computed on 23 September 2026, not measured journeys. No availability series has been run for any of them.

No May date on this page

The research behind this cluster cited FSU’s 2026-2027 academic calendar PDF for a spring 2027 commencement on 7 and 8 May. That PDF returned 404 when checked, twice, and no live FSU page carries a 2027 date. So this page covers December and says nothing about May. The same check also found that FSU’s spring rules are not December’s: the clear-bag policy, the Washington Drive shuttle and the “tickets will not be required” line all belong to the undergraduate ceremony in the Crown Coliseum, a different building from Capel Arena.

Not claimed here

No availability count, because none was measured. No graduate count, because FSU does not publish one on the pages read. No December ticket rule, because the page states none. No parking detail, for the same reason.

Frequently asked questions

Which hotel is closest to Capel Arena?

By drive time, the Hilton Garden Inn at 4025 Sycamore Dairy Road, about five and a half miles and ten minutes, with 104 rooms and suites per HotelGuides. The Hampton Inn at 1700 Skibo Road is the same ten minutes with 131 rooms. Nothing is within walking distance of campus.

Will Fayetteville sell out?

No matched-window availability series has been run for Fayetteville, so this page publishes no count, and no university or hotel statement about sell-outs was found. The city has a large hotel base serving Fort Bragg, so a single December ceremony is unlikely to empty it; the risk is a Fort Bragg event on the same weekend, not commencement itself.

Which nights do we need?

The Thursday night, 10 December. The ceremony is at 10:00am on the Friday and no guest is admitted after the 9:45am processional, so a morning drive from out of town is a gamble. The graduate has rehearsal at 2:00pm on the Thursday in the same arena.

Where is the overflow?

Spring Lake is 15 minutes north and Hope Mills 18 minutes south, both small. Lumberton, 45 minutes down I-95, and Sanford, 51 minutes northwest, have their own chain hotels and only matter if the city is full.

Do we need tickets?

Not stated for December. FSU's winter commencement page carries the door and processional rules but no ticket rule, and the Special Events team takes ticket questions at events@uncfsu.edu. Ask your graduate before you assume there is no limit.

When is the spring 2027 ceremony?

Not published on any FSU page this site could read on 23 September 2026. The registrar's 2026-2027 academic calendar PDF, the only source offered for a May 2027 date, returned 404. This site does not print a date it cannot read.
