The weekend, and how big it gets

Georgetown has published Homecoming Weekend 2026 for Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October.

For scale, the university’s own thank-you for the previous year names more than 3,000 alumni, students and friends who registered. That is a registration count rather than a turnstile figure, and it is the honest version of the number, but it tells you what the neighbourhood absorbs on that weekend.

Two nights is the shape of the trip even though the published weekend is two days. The Friday programme opens in the early afternoon and Saturday runs on into the evening, so a family driving in for Friday lunchtime and out on Sunday morning is the ordinary pattern.

Why Georgetown itself fills before the rest of DC

Washington is a large hotel market. Georgetown is not.

The neighbourhood is a small, low-rise historic district, and it was never built up with the hotel towers that sit downtown or near the convention centre. That is the same constraint the university’s commencement weekend runs into, and it is the reason Georgetown operates its own guest housing at all rather than pointing families at commercial hotels.

The practical read: a room in Georgetown proper is a scarce thing on this weekend, and the rest of DC is not a substitute for it if you want to walk to the Hilltop.

What is already on the schedule

Georgetown has posted the programme, which is worth reading before you fix your nights.

Friday opens in the early afternoon with lectures, including Professor Benjamin Harbert on rock and roll history and the Cold War at 2 p.m. and Professor Elizabeth Grimm on the laws of war at 3 p.m., alongside longer afternoon sessions running to 5 p.m. Saturday picks up from late morning. A Homecoming Giving Challenge runs alongside the weekend, with class match-ups between reunion years.

If your reason for coming is a specific reunion event rather than the weekend in general, the schedule is the thing that decides whether you need the Thursday night as well.

Where the rooms actually are

Arlington sits about 12 minutes away across the Potomac and returned roughly 1,705 properties on a live check. Bethesda is about 14 minutes out and returned roughly 3,460, the deeper of the two. Both are separate jurisdictions rather than DC neighbourhoods, which is exactly why their inventory does not move with Georgetown’s calendar.

Those counts were gathered for this cluster’s commencement weekend rather than for an October Saturday. Drive time is the part that carries over unchanged; treat the counts as evidence that depth exists out there, not as an October forecast.

What we could not confirm

No Georgetown-area hotel was found publishing a homecoming room block, a minimum-stay rule or a cancellation deadline, so there is no booking deadline on this page.

The football fixture and its kickoff time are not asserted here. Neither is a rate for any property on this weekend: the price evidence this cluster carries was gathered in May, and quoting it for October would be inventing a number.

Georgetown’s own Commencement Housing programme, which rents residence hall rooms to families, is a commencement service. We found nothing saying it operates for homecoming, and have not assumed that it does.
