Start with the university's own numbers: 1,531 seniors applied to graduate in 2026 and SUNY Cortland anticipated more than 5,000 guests for one commencement weekend. Cortland's hotels are three chain properties within three miles of the Park Center Alumni Arena, the Fairfield Inn with 81 rooms, the Holiday Inn Express with 74 and the Hampton Inn with 69, all on the university's own lodging page, which calls itself a partial list. About 220 rooms. The weekend is a graduate ceremony on Friday 14 May 2027 and undergraduate ceremonies on Saturday 15 May, three of them in 2026 at 9:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., so the Friday night is the one everyone needs and the Saturday depends on the sitting. Book Cortland now if you can; the honest plan for most families is Ithaca, Syracuse or Binghamton, each about forty minutes and each a real city.

Five thousand guests, one weekend, one small city
SUNY Cortland put the scale in its own words for 2026: 1,531 seniors applied to graduate, and “More than 5,000 of their guests are anticipated.” All of it in one weekend, because the university holds only one commencement a year.
Cortland is a city of about 17,000. Its hotels are three chain properties.
The three, from the university’s own page
SUNY Cortland’s admissions lodging page names them and calls itself a partial list.
Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites Cortland, 3707 Route 281. Under a mile and four minutes from the Park Center Alumni Arena. 81 rooms per Northstar. The closest.
Holiday Inn Express Cortland, 4.5 Locust Avenue. About two and a half miles and seven minutes. 74 rooms, the hotel’s own figure.
Hampton Inn Cortland, 26 River Street. Also about seven minutes. 69 rooms per Northstar.
About 220 rooms. No matched-window availability series has been run for Cortland, so this page publishes no count of what remains on the weekend. Two hundred and twenty rooms against five thousand guests does not need one.
Friday night for everyone
The registrar’s calendar splits the weekend: graduate commencement Friday 14 May 2027, undergraduate commencement Saturday 15 May 2027, both weekday cross-checked. In 2026 the graduate ceremony was Friday at 7 p.m. and the undergraduates were split into three Saturday ceremonies at 9:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
So the Friday night is the one every family needs. Whether the Saturday matters depends on the undergraduate ceremony assignment, which is not published for 2027; a 7 p.m. Saturday ceremony means staying.
Three cities at forty minutes
This ring is better than most. Ithaca, 37 minutes west on NY-13, has more than 1,700 rooms in the Northstar directory. Syracuse, 46 minutes north on I-81, has more than 2,000 and the nearest major airport. Binghamton, 58 minutes south on I-81, has several branded hotels. Auburn, just over an hour, is the far edge.
One check before choosing: Cornell, Ithaca College and Binghamton University all graduate in May. A weekend that coincides with one of them empties that city too.
Drive times are off-peak road routes to the arena computed on 14 September 2026, not measured journeys.
Not claimed here
No commencement-specific hotel policy, because none of the three publishes one. No 2027 venue; the Park Center hosted 2026 and appears here as history. No December round, by the university’s own statement. No availability count, because none was measured.

Yes, an admissions lodging page that names the three above and others, and says of itself: "This page features only a partial listing of overnight accommodations."
Will Cortland sell out?
No matched-window availability series has been run for Cortland, so this page publishes no count. About 220 rooms in town against more than 5,000 expected guests is the structure. Most families will not be in Cortland.
Which night do we need?
Friday 14 May for everyone: the graduate ceremony is that evening and the undergraduate ceremonies are Saturday morning onward. A 7 p.m. Saturday undergraduate ceremony, which 2026 had, means the Saturday night too. The 2027 assignments are not yet published.
Where do families actually stay?
Ithaca, 37 minutes west, with more than 1,700 rooms in the Northstar directory. Syracuse, 46 minutes north, with more than 2,000 and the nearest major airport. Binghamton, 58 minutes south. All three are university cities with May commencements of their own; check the dates.
Is there a December round?

How many guest tickets?
Four electronic tickets per undergraduate in 2026; the graduate ceremony did not require them. The 2027 rule is not yet posted.
