Tufts Commencement 2027 runs across two days, Saturday 22 May and Sunday 23 May. Tufts publishes its dates years ahead, which is more than most universities do, but the schedule inside those two days was not published at this check: no ceremony times, no venue for either day, and no statement of which day carries what. That last one matters more than it sounds. Tufts runs commencement in TWO PHASES, one all-university ceremony and then separate ceremonies for each school, and it has not said which of the two days holds which. So a family attending one school's ceremony genuinely cannot yet tell whether they need the Saturday or the Sunday. Tufts's own site is meanwhile telling guests to book now because space is at a premium in May. The workable answer is to hold both nights and release one when the schedule lands.

Two phases, and Tufts has not said which day is which

The structure is the part that was missing from this page, and it is the part that decides your booking.

Tufts does not run one ceremony. In its own words, commencement “is divided into two parts, the All University Commencement ceremony (phase I) and the individual degree ceremonies (phase II).” Phase I is everybody at once. Phase II is your graduate’s school, on its own, and for most families that is the one they are really travelling for.

For 2027, Tufts has published “May 22-23” and nothing else. Not which day carries Phase I. Not which day carries which school’s Phase II. Not a time for either.

So the question a family actually needs answered, which day is my school’s ceremony, does not currently have an answer.

What Tufts has published, and what it has not

Tufts is unusually generous with dates and unusually quiet about everything else.

Published: Commencement 2027 runs Saturday 22 May and Sunday 23 May. The university lists its future dates years in advance.

Not published at this check: ceremony start times, which schools graduate on which of the two days, and per-school venues.

We have not filled those gaps from a previous year’s schedule. Times and venue assignments are precisely the details that shift between years, and a page that quietly reuses last year’s numbers is worse than a page that says it does not know.

The gap is the logistics problem

Put the two halves together and you can see the bind Tufts families are in.

The university tells you to book lodging as soon as possible, because space is at a premium in May. It also has not told you which of the two days you are attending.

You are being asked to commit to nights in a tightening market before you know which nights you need. That is not a criticism of Tufts, whose schedule for a ceremony two years out genuinely may not exist yet. It is just the situation, and it deserves naming rather than smoothing over.

Hold both, release one

The practical answer is unglamorous.

Book the Friday-to-Sunday span if your budget and the cancellation terms allow, then drop the night you do not need once the schedule appears. In a market this tight the option value of a refundable extra night is usually worth more than the saving from guessing right.

If you can only book one night, the Saturday is the safer single bet, because it covers a Saturday ceremony outright and covers the morning of a Sunday one.

Read the cancellation terms before you rely on this. Some properties in the Boston market tighten them for high-demand weekends, and we could not confirm the commencement-specific terms at any named hotel here.

Getting there on the day

The campus sits at 419 Boston Ave on the Medford and Somerville line, inside greater Boston rather than in a college town of its own.

That means ordinary metropolitan travel conditions rather than a single congested approach road: several routes in, transit within reach, and traffic that behaves like a city rather than like a town of ten thousand absorbing forty thousand visitors.

It also means that if you are staying in Waltham or Newton, roughly 20 minutes out, your drive is a normal suburban commute rather than a rural crawl. Without a published start time we cannot tell you when to leave, which is another reason the schedule is the thing to watch for.

The microsite looks current and is not

Worth knowing before you go looking for the times yourself.

commencement.tufts.edu is Tufts’s dedicated commencement site and it is still serving the 2026 cycle. It leads with “May 17, 2026” and the 170th Commencement, its schedule page is built around the 2026 week, and the individual school pages (Fletcher’s, for one) carry 2026 detail with a banner promising more to come.

Nothing on it is wrong. All of it is last year. If you read a time, a venue or a per-school slot off that site, you are reading May 2026.

The one page that is current is the future-dates page, and all it says is the range.

What we checked, and what we could not

The two dates come from Tufts’s own future commencement dates page, with 22 May confirmed as a Saturday and 23 May as a Sunday against the calendar. The lodging warning is quoted from the university’s own off-campus lodging page.

Unestablished at this check: ceremony times, per-school day assignments, venues, ticket limits, parking, and any rain arrangements. Of those, the day assignment is the one that changes your booking, and it is worth checking Tufts’s commencement site directly before you finalise.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 2027 dates?

Saturday 22 May and Sunday 23 May 2027, from Tufts's own published future dates. Both weekdays check out against the calendar.

What time does the ceremony start?

Not published for 2027 at this check. We have not reconstructed a time from a previous year, because a start time is exactly the sort of detail that moves.

Which day is my school on?

Also not published, and it is the single detail that decides which night you need. Tufts divides commencement into Phase I, the all-university ceremony, and Phase II, the individual degree ceremonies run by each school. Which of the two days carries which has not been published for 2027.

Where is it held?

Not published for 2027. Tufts gives a date range and nothing else. We previously stored a street address for the Medford campus and have removed it: it appears on no 2027 page and was carried forward from an earlier year.

Is there a December ceremony?

No. Tufts confers degrees in February, May and August, and only the May conferral carries a ceremony. Graduates who finished the previous February or August are invited to take part in the May round. There is no December conferral in the cycle at all.

So how many nights should I book?

Both, if you can cancel one. Booking against an unknown day and trimming later costs less than finding nothing when the schedule is released and the market has already tightened.

Where is the campus?

On the Medford and Somerville line, at 419 Boston Ave, Medford. It is inside greater Boston rather than in a college town of its own.
