The Sunday matters. Almost every cluster on this site runs a Friday-to-Saturday round and families book accordingly out of habit. A Sunday ceremony means the night you want is the Saturday, and a family that books the conventional graduation weekend is checking out on the morning of the ceremony.
What UNC has now published
UNC’s commencement site has rolled forward and names both venues.
Winter Commencement is Sunday 13 December 2026 at 2 p.m. in the Dean E. Smith Center. Graduates should arrive no later than 1:30 p.m. and enter through Gate D, and a clear bag policy is in effect: guests may bring a clear plastic bag no larger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches or a small clutch purse.
Spring Commencement is Saturday 8 May 2027 at 7 p.m. in Kenan Stadium, with departmental ceremonies from Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 May. UNC says more 2027 information, including parking, will be released in the spring semester.
Until now this page named neither venue, on purpose. Kenan Memorial Stadium is an open-air football stadium, a December ceremony there was unlikely, and there was no source either way. The December ceremony is indoors, which bears the caution out.
What that leaves you able to plan
More than it sounds.
The dates are solid. They come from the university’s own academic calendar, which is the source that carries forward dates reliably when the commencement microsite has not rolled over yet.
The shape of the market is knowable even when the schedule is not. Chapel Hill is a small town beside two much larger ones: Durham is about 20 minutes away and Raleigh about 40, and both have far deeper hotel inventory. That is the structural fact this cluster runs on, and it does not change with the ceremony time.
For December, a Sunday 2 p.m. ceremony points at the Saturday night. For May, a 7 p.m. Saturday ceremony makes the night of the ceremony the one that matters, since nobody leaves a stadium at nine for a long drive; and departmental ceremonies from Thursday 6 May mean a family attending one needs earlier nights. What we checked
UNC’s 2026-2027 academic calendar was read on 18 August 2026, and both dates were taken from it directly. UNC’s commencement site was read on 17 October 2026 for the venues and times. The Fall Commencement line sits inside the fall 2026 block, whose classes-begin date is Monday 17 August, which is what fixes the year. Weekdays were verified independently: 13 December 2026 is a Sunday and 8 May 2027 is a Saturday.
Worth recording that the source this cluster already cited did contain the fact it was cited for, which is not something to take for granted: the spring date checked out exactly. What it also contained, and what nobody had read, was the December round.
Not published, and each a real absence: any school-by-school split, spring parking and logistics (UNC says they will come in the spring semester), any ticket or guest limit, and a 2027 date for the separate Doctoral Hooding ceremony.

UNC runs a separate Doctoral Hooding ceremony. No 2027 date for it was findable at the time of writing, so it is not stored here. If your graduate is a doctoral candidate, ask their department rather than relying on the university-wide date.
