Which ceremony you have changes the booking entirely
These are not interchangeable, and the difference is a night either way.
The Friday 6:00 p.m. ceremony finishes after dark in December. Essentially nobody drives home afterwards, so that group needs the night of the ceremony.
The Saturday 9:00 a.m. ceremony needs the night before — and an early winter start with a drive in is the least forgiving combination on this page.
The Saturday 3:00 p.m. graduate ceremony sits comfortably in the middle and may need neither, if you are within an hour or two.

Weigh the road, not the mileage
This is a December round in Pennsylvania, and that changes the calculation.
Exton, about fifteen minutes north on the Route 30 corridor, is unremarkable suburban chain inventory — which is exactly what you want when the priority is a clear road in on a winter morning.
Philadelphia, about forty minutes east, has effectively unlimited rooms and is the guaranteed fallback. For a 9:00 a.m. Saturday ceremony in December it is a long, early, dark drive, so weigh it against Exton rather than assuming the bigger market wins.

Does December change where we should stay?
It can. A Pennsylvania December makes the road a real variable, so the sensible comparison is not only how far a hotel is but what you would be driving. Exton at fifteen minutes on the Route 30 corridor can be a better bet than Philadelphia at forty, even though Philadelphia has vastly more rooms.
