Three ceremonies, one Friday, and FSU picks yours

FSU graduates everyone on a single date and splits them across the day instead of across a weekend. Friday 11 December 2026, at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, 505 West Pensacola Street.

Doctoral candidates go first, at 9:00 a.m. Bachelor, master and specialist candidates are divided between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. FSU assigns that division; graduates do not choose it.

That assignment is the single fact your travel depends on. A 9:00 a.m. ceremony and a 7:00 p.m. ceremony on the same calendar date are not the same trip: one needs you in Tallahassee the night before with time to park, the other lets you arrive during the day but puts you on the road late or into a second night. Families who book before they know which sitting applies routinely book the wrong nights.

The venue is settled and worth stating plainly. FSU’s registrar publishes it as a standing fact rather than a per-round announcement: “Graduation ceremonies are held in the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center located at 505 West Pensacola Street.”

Everyone over the age of two needs a ticket

This is the rule most likely to catch a family out, and it is quoted exactly: “Any person over the age of two requires a ticket to enter the Tucker Center for the graduation ceremony.”

A three-year-old needs a ticket. A grandparent who decided to come at the last minute needs a ticket, and there may not be one.

How the process runs, from FSU’s own tickets page. Graduates get a commencement RSVP at their FSU student email. After the RSVP deadline, those attending are invited to request guest tickets through the Tucker Center, and the instruction email is “typically sent three weeks before the day of the ceremony”, which lands around 20 November 2026. Tickets are issued to the graduate and distributed to guests through Ticketmaster. Graduates get a separate Grad Pass by email in the week of the ceremony, which is their own entry.

How many tickets each graduate receives is not published. The figure on FSU’s page is literally “TBD” as of this check. That is the number a family sizes its travelling party against, so until it appears, treat the guest list as provisional and do not book flights for people who may not get in. If tickets remain after the deadline, FSU opens a second request round by email. The ceremonies are webcast live, which is the real answer for anyone who cannot be given a seat.

Parking changes at half past four

FSU publishes its graduation parking in detail, and the detail matters here in a way it would not on a Saturday, because 11 December is a Friday and several options are time-gated to the end of the working day.

Available all day: Civic Center parking and the FSU garage on St. Augustine Street, both $10 a car, both described by FSU as “extremely limited”. Free all day: the Westcott East lot and the College and Macomb lots, east and west.

Opening later on the Friday: the state lots reached from West Madison, South Bronough or Duval Street are $10 and only accessible from Duval after 5:00 p.m., while the Diffenbaugh, North Westcott and Law School lots become free graduation parking after 4:30 p.m.

Put that against the ceremony times and the consequence is clear. The 7:00 p.m. sitting has the run of the city. The 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. sittings are competing for a limited paid lot and three free ones, on a working Friday, in a state capital where the surrounding streets are one-way. If your ceremony is one of the first two, arriving early is not general advice, it is the whole plan. Illegally parked cars are towed by city police.

The other university graduating that day

FAMU holds its own Fall 2026 commencement on the same Friday, 11 December, roughly two miles away.

It changes nothing about your ceremony and everything about the roads and the rooms around it. Two graduating universities put two sets of families into the same city on the same morning, competing for the same hotel stock and moving through the same downtown grid at overlapping times. If you are driving in from Thomasville or Valdosta, add margin for that rather than for the distance alone.

Still unpublished, and not guessed at

Everything above comes from FSU’s own commencement, graduation, tickets and parking pages, all read on 11 August 2026. The weekday arithmetic is ours: 11 December 2026 is a Friday.

What FSU had not published when we checked, and what is therefore absent here rather than estimated: the number of guest tickets per graduate, doors-open times for any of the three ceremonies, how long a ceremony runs, the RSVP and ticket-request deadline dates, any bag policy, and the entire spring 2027 schedule. The 2026 spring round’s equivalents exist and none has been carried forward to stand in for December.
