The University of Kentucky's next commencement is Friday 18 December 2026, not next May. It comes from the registrar's five-year calendar, a separate page from the main academic calendar, where the "Commencement (F)" row reads 12/18/2026 and "Commencement (F-S)" reads 5/7/2027-5/8/2027. UK labels those dates projected and subject to change, and its commencement office has published no time, venue or ticket rule for either. What is stable is where: UK graduates at Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center, 430 West Vine Street, in downtown Lexington rather than on campus, which is why the downtown hotels matter so much here.

The next one is in December, and it is on a different page
UK’s next commencement is Friday 18 December 2026.
That date is not on the university’s commencement site, which still shows May 2026 and earlier. It is on the registrar’s five-year calendar, a separate page from the main academic calendar, in a five-column grid running Fall 2025 through Fall 2029. The “Commencement (F)” row reads 12/18/2026 in the Fall 2026 column, and the “Commencement (F-S)” row reads 5/7/2027-5/8/2027 in the Spring 2027 column.
The “(F)” and “(F-S)” are UK’s own weekday labels, and both hold: 18 December 2026 is a Friday, 7 May 2027 a Friday, 8 May 2027 a Saturday. The value also moves down the row year on year, 12/19/2025 then 12/18/2026 then 12/17/2027, so it is a maintained calendar rather than a copy left standing.
Almost all coverage of graduation at this university describes the May weekend. May is the larger event. It is not the next one.
How much these dates will carry
Enough to book a refundable room. Not enough to buy a non-refundable flight.
UK describes the five-year calendar as giving “key term dates occurring over the next five academic years”, approved against current policy, and states plainly that “dates projected are subject to change should such policies be modified.” We are passing that on rather than presenting a projection as a schedule.
Separately, the commencement office has published no start time, no venue and no ticket rule for either round. So the day is knowable a long way out and the day’s shape is not, which is an unusual split and worth planning around: hold the date, delay the detail.
Downtown, not on campus
The most useful logistical fact about UK commencement has nothing to do with dates.
UK graduates at Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center, 430 West Vine Street, in downtown Lexington. The university campus is elsewhere in the city. Families who book near campus because that is where the university is have booked the wrong end of town, and will drive and park on a ceremony morning.
For a December Friday that gap matters more than it would in May. The hotels page covers the one property connected to the arena by a covered skywalk, which is a weather argument as much as a convenience one.
What is still open
Start times for either round, the venue for either round, ticket or guest limits, and whether December runs one ceremony or several. None of it is published, and none of it is inferred here from the May 2026 cycle.
The venue deserves its own line. UK held May 2026 at Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center, and that is why this page names it, but the five-year calendar carries dates without venues. Rupp is where UK has graduated, not a confirmed booking for December 2026.
When commencement.uky.edu publishes the 2026 and 2027 running orders, this page should be re-read against it, and so should the booking window.

Frequently asked questions
When is UK's next commencement?
Friday 18 December 2026. The registrar's five-year calendar carries it in the "Commencement (F)" row, Fall 2026 column. The "(F)" is UK's own weekday label and it checks out: 18 December 2026 is a Friday.
And the spring round?
Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May 2027, from the "Commencement (F-S)" row in the Spring 2027 column. Two days, not one, and both weekdays match UK's label.
Why does UK's commencement site not show these?
Because the two pages run on different schedules. The registrar sets term dates years ahead on the five-year calendar; the commencement office publishes the running order much later. As at 10 August 2026 commencement.uky.edu still lists May 2026 and earlier.
How much weight do these dates carry?
Enough to book a room against, not enough to buy a non-refundable flight on. UK states that the five-year calendar gives projected dates and that they are "subject to change should such policies be modified". No time, venue or ticket rule has been published for either round.
Where does UK actually graduate?
Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center, 430 West Vine Street, in downtown Lexington. Not on the university campus. That is the single most useful logistical fact here, because it moves the walkable hotels from the campus edge into the city centre.
What is different about a December ceremony?
The shape of the trip. A single Friday brings the crowd in across one day rather than spreading it over a weekend, and a Lexington December puts weather between your hotel and the arena, which is the practical case for the covered skywalk described on the hotels page.
