Michigan Commencement: Crisler in December, the Big House in May

The nearer ceremony is in December, and it has a venue

Michigan’s own Calendar of Events lists Winter Commencement on Sunday, 20 December 2026 at 2:00 p.m., in Crisler Center, 333 East Stadium Boulevard.

Almost everything written about Michigan graduation describes the May weekend below. May is the bigger event by a wide margin. It is not the next one, and the December round is fully published: date, building, street address and start time.

That matters for a practical reason. A December ceremony in Ann Arbor is a winter-weather trip to a town whose hotel stock is small, and the crowd arrives across a single afternoon rather than a full weekend.

Michigan Stadium, and a 10 a.m. start

Spring Commencement is Saturday 8 May 2027 at 10:00 a.m., at Michigan Stadium, 1201 South Main Street.

Michigan Stadium seats 107,601 and is the largest stadium in the United States. No other campus in this project puts its graduation crowd inside a venue built for six-figure attendance, and it is exactly why the town’s hotel and restaurant capacity cannot keep up: the stadium alone holds more people than Ann Arbor’s entire hotel inventory could ever house.

Put the 10 a.m. start against that seat count. The whole crowd parks and walks in during the same two hours on a Saturday morning. The Detroit-suburb price play described on the lodging page is a genuinely good way to sleep more cheaply, and a genuinely bad way to reach a 10 a.m. seat in the Big House.

The day before, Rackham Graduate Exercises, Michigan’s graduate-degree ceremony, runs separately at Crisler Center on Friday 7 May at 10:00 a.m. Commencement activities overall span Thursday 6 May to Sunday 9 May 2027, per Michigan’s own academic calendar.

A three-campus collision worth knowing about

The 6 to 9 May 2027 span is not only Michigan’s commencement weekend. It is the same weekend as Penn State’s and Wisconsin’s.

A family with graduates at more than one of those three is not planning logistics, it is choosing which ceremony to attend. Our Penn State guide covers the other end of that clash.

What Michigan has not published

Which schools and colleges hold their own recognition events, and when. Michigan says plainly that many do, and directs families to contact the individual school or college, so those are not on any central page and cannot be planned from here.

Ticketing and guest limits for either round. Nothing on the central calendar states a cap, and this page does not infer one from the stadium’s capacity.

Whether the December ceremony has the same guest arrangements as the spring rounds. Crisler Center holds a fraction of what Michigan Stadium does, which makes it the more likely of the two to have a limit, and Michigan has not said either way.
