SUNY New Paltz's 2027 calendar lists a graduate ceremony on Friday 21 May at 6 pm, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on Saturday 22 May at 10 am, and the Schools of Business, Education, Fine and Performing Arts and Science and Engineering on Sunday 23 May at 10 am. In 2026 all three were outdoors on the Old Main Quad, rain or shine. New Paltz is a village of 7,000, and its hotels are three at the Thruway exit a mile from campus: the Hampton Inn with 86 rooms, the Americas Best Value Inn with 69 and the Rodeway Inn & Suites with 39 units, per HotelGuides. A Saturday graduate's family needs the Friday night; a Sunday graduate's family the Saturday night. Undergraduates get seven guest tickets for the reserved seats and anyone else may bring a lawn chair. Poughkeepsie is 21 minutes across the bridge, Kingston 27 minutes north; book the village early or plan on one of them.

Three hotels, one exit, about 190 rooms
New Paltz’s hotels are where the Thruway meets Route 299, a mile and a quarter from campus. The Hampton Inn, 4 South Putt Corners Road, has 86 rooms over three floors per HotelGuides. Beside it the Americas Best Value Inn, 7 Terwilliger Lane, has 69 rooms, a budget property. On Main Street toward the exit, the Rodeway Inn & Suites, 601 Main Street, has 19 rooms and 20 suites. Four to six minutes from campus, all of them.
That is the village’s inventory. None of the three publishes a commencement-specific minimum stay, prepayment or cancellation rule, and none is claimed here. SUNY New Paltz does not publish a hotel list on the pages read.
Three days, and the school decides which one is yours
The 2027 academic calendar lists each ceremony with a time: Friday 21 May, Graduate Commencement Ceremony, 6 pm to 7:30 pm; Saturday 22 May, Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences), 10 am; Sunday 23 May, Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony (Schools of Business, Education, Fine & Performing Arts, Science & Engineering), 10 a.m. All three weekdays check.
A CLAS family needs the Friday night. A Business, Education, Arts or Science and Engineering family needs the Saturday night. A master’s graduate’s family needs Friday, arriving by late afternoon. A family with a Saturday undergraduate and a Sunday one needs the weekend, and there are 190 rooms in the village.
The calendar gives no venue beyond “SUNY New Paltz”. In 2026 all three ceremonies were on the Old Main Quad, rain or shine, after the graduate ceremony was moved there from the Athletic & Wellness Center. The ceremony weekend logistics page carries the 2026 venue as the pattern.
Seven tickets, and a lawn for everyone else
From the commencement page, describing 2026 and read on 20 September 2026: for the undergraduate ceremonies, “Up to seven (7) guest tickets may be reserved by qualifying graduates to their ceremony online.” Then: “Additional guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets and sit outside the reserved seating area. Children ages 2+ require a ticket for entry into the reserved seating area.” The graduate ceremony is “Open seating - no tickets required”, up to seven guests. A shuttle runs between the Athletic & Wellness Center, the parking lots and the Lecture Center. Every ceremony is livestreamed.
Seven ticketed guests plus unlimited lawn seating is generous, and it is why the village will not hold the weekend.
The river towns are the plan
Poughkeepsie, 21 minutes east across the Mid-Hudson Bridge, is a city with a full hotel base and its own May commencement demand from Vassar and Marist; this site’s Vassar cluster has their dates, and a clash is worth checking. Kingston, 27 minutes north at the next Thruway exit, has interchange hotels. Newburgh, 32 minutes south, has Stewart airport and the I-84 junction. Middletown, 50 minutes, is the last resort.
Drive times are off-peak road routes computed on 20 September 2026, not measured journeys. No availability series has been run for any of them.
Not claimed here
No availability count, because none was measured. No graduate count, because New Paltz does not publish one on the pages read. No 2027 venue, because the calendar does not state one; the Old Main Quad is the 2026 pattern. No December ceremony, because the calendar sends December graduates to May.

Frequently asked questions
Which hotel is closest to campus?
The Hampton Inn at 4 South Putt Corners Road and the Americas Best Value Inn at 7 Terwilliger Lane sit together at the Thruway exit, about a mile and a quarter and four minutes from campus, with 86 and 69 rooms per HotelGuides. The Rodeway Inn & Suites on Main Street (Route 299) is six minutes with 19 rooms and 20 suites.
Will New Paltz sell out?
No matched-window availability series has been run for New Paltz, so this page publishes no count, and no university or hotel statement about sell-outs was found. Structurally, 190 rooms against three ceremonies over three days with seven ticketed guests each is the thinnest ratio in this part of the valley; the river towns are the plan, not the fallback.
Which night do we need?
Friday night for a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences undergraduate (Saturday 10 am). Saturday night for Business, Education, Fine and Performing Arts or Science and Engineering (Sunday 10 am). Friday night, arriving by late afternoon, for the graduate ceremony at 6 pm. A family with graduates on two days needs the weekend.
Where is the overflow?
Poughkeepsie, 21 minutes across the Mid-Hudson Bridge, has a full hotel base and its own Vassar and Marist commencement demand, which this site's Vassar cluster covers. Kingston, 27 minutes north at the next Thruway exit, has interchange hotels. Newburgh, 32 minutes south, has Stewart airport; Middletown is 50 minutes.
Do we need tickets?
For the undergraduate ceremonies, yes for the reserved seats: "Up to seven (7) guest tickets may be reserved by qualifying graduates to their ceremony online," and "Additional guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets and sit outside the reserved seating area." Children aged two and up need a ticket for the reserved area. The graduate ceremony is open seating, no tickets, up to seven guests. Per the commencement page describing 2026, read on 20 September 2026.
Is there a December ceremony?
No. The calendar's rule for December graduates is that they "participate in May" the following year; the 2027 calendar says so for December 2027 applicants, and the same rule sends December 2026 graduates to the May 2027 ceremonies.
