Two ceremonies, two addresses

This is the fact worth arriving with.

Both start at five. They are not in the same building, and they are not at the same street address. A family with a graduate in each ceremony drives to two different places on two consecutive evenings.

Valdosta State also publishes something most universities leave you guessing at: how long each ceremony runs. The graduate ceremony should end between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m., the undergraduate one around 6:30 p.m. Both are roughly ninety minutes. That is short by the standards of this site, and it changes the evening: a ceremony that ends by half six leaves dinner entirely possible, which is not true at universities running three-hour ceremonies.

The Saturday ceremony is outdoors, and it runs after dark

The undergraduate ceremony is on the Front Lawn. Not in a hall named after a lawn: on the grass, in the open air.

It starts at 5:00 p.m. on 12 December and ends around 6:30 p.m. Sunset in Valdosta in mid-December falls at about half past five, so the ceremony opens in the last of the daylight and finishes well after dark. South Georgia is mild by December standards and that is exactly what catches people out: the afternoon can be pleasant and the hour after sunset, sitting still on a lawn, is a different proposition. Dress for the evening rather than for the forecast high.

Valdosta State publishes no rain plan and no severe-weather contingency for it, anywhere we could open. We looked, because an outdoor December ceremony is the single most obvious thing to have a wet-weather policy for. If the forecast turns in the week beforehand, contact the university rather than assuming the ceremony moves into The Complex.

No tickets, and that genuinely means no tickets

Tickets are not required for either ceremony and graduates can invite as many guests as they like. Seating is first come first serve, but there is plenty of seating available.

That is Valdosta State’s own wording, and it removes the constraint that dominates planning at most universities. There is no allocation to chase and no cap to work around.

What it does not remove is the first-come part. Gates open two hours before each ceremony, so 3:00 p.m. on both days, and graduates check in from 3:30. If your party is large and wants to sit together, the gate opening is the time that matters rather than the ceremony start.

One rule worth knowing before someone buys balloons: balloons are not allowed in the seating areas at either venue, because they block the view. They are permitted at the very back of The Complex or the Front Lawn.

Getting in, and getting close

For guests who need step-free access or a drop-off, Valdosta State publishes this in more detail than most, and it differs by venue.

The Complex, Friday. Accessible seating is on the floor, behind the graduates. Accessible drop-off and accessible parking are both in the Sustella lot on the west side of the building, first come first served.

The Front Lawn, Saturday. Accessible seating is on the outside of the graduate seating. There are two drop-off points: one on the south side of the Front Lawn by the main Patterson Street entrance, and one on the north side, reached from Georgia Avenue by turning into the Powell Hall loop, where a driver can drop guests and continue round the loop back onto Georgia Avenue. Accessible parking is also available in the university lots along Georgia Avenue.

For the Saturday ceremony, guests may move closer to the stage for a better view, but not stand along the barricades or block the view of anyone seated near them. University Police enforce it.

Plan where you will meet afterwards

Small thing, easy to skip, and Valdosta State is unusually direct about it:

We, unfortunately, have no way of knowing where your graduate will be sitting. Graduates are not seated in alphabetical order.

So pick a landmark and a time before the ceremony starts. On the Front Lawn in the dark, with a few thousand people leaving at once, “we will find each other after” is not a plan.

Spring 2027 has not been published, and one page will suggest otherwise

Worth stating plainly, because the trap is easy to fall into and we nearly did.

Valdosta State’s registrar academic calendar does carry commencement rows against May 8 and May 9. They are not 2027. They sit in a table headed “First Class Day for spring 2026” and “Last class day for spring 2026”, and 8 May 2026 was a Friday with 9 May a Saturday, matching Valdosta State’s Friday-graduate, Saturday-undergraduate pattern exactly. That is an already-held round still sitting on a live page.

The only 2027 entries anywhere on that calendar are registration windows. Treat spring 2027 as unannounced, and if you are booking for a spring graduate, do not assume the second weekend in May.

What we checked

Both dates, both times, both venues, both street addresses, the expected end times, the ticket position, the gate opening and the accessibility arrangements were read directly from Valdosta State’s own commencement page and its commencement FAQ on 18 August 2026, and the dates cross-checked against the registrar academic calendar. Days of the week were verified independently: 11 December 2026 is a Friday and 12 December a Saturday.

Two corrections this audit made to our own pages are worth naming. We had been showing 1500 N. Patterson Street for both ceremonies; The Complex is at 401 Baytree Road, so anyone following our Friday address was being sent to the wrong part of campus. And we had been describing both venues as inferred from Valdosta State’s “established pattern” rather than confirmed. They are published now, and the hedge is gone.

Not published, and each of these is a real gap: any rain or severe-weather plan for the outdoor Saturday ceremony, any spring 2027 date, a graduating-class figure, and any bag policy for either venue.
