Fort Collins is roughly 75 minutes south, over the Laramie Range on US-287 and across the state line into Colorado. It is a substantial city with its own university and a genuinely independent hotel market — the deepest inventory within a sensible drive of Laramie.

Both fallbacks share one weakness

Laramie’s difficulty in December is not simply that rooms are scarce. It is that the roads close. Visit Laramie publishes a guide to hotels for exactly that circumstance, describing Wyoming winter roads as “always a bit of a gamble.”
A room 50 or 75 miles away solves a scarcity problem and creates a travel one. If I-80 shuts between Cheyenne and Laramie on the Friday night, or if US-287 over the range is bad on Saturday morning, your booking is somewhere you cannot get to a ceremony from. That is a different and worse failure than paying too much for a room near campus.
If the road shuts while you are on it
Worth knowing before you need it: the single most useful resource in that moment is not a ring-town list at all. It is Visit Laramie’s own road-closure guide, which names nine Laramie properties across three price tiers specifically for people waiting out a storm.
If you are choosing between a cheaper room an hour away and a more expensive one within walking distance of the Arena-Auditorium, price the second one as insurance rather than as lodging. In most markets on this site that would be an overreaction. Here, the city’s own tourism bureau has effectively already made the argument.
